The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he remained under home detention pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after fresh information came to light.

This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a demonstration that could facilitate a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His son, his son Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a gathering of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on social media on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your couch? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so supporters could offer prayers for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

International Reactions

Bolsonaro is being detained in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will have a custody hearing on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that the former president be authorized to leave his home for healthcare, saying he required regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the presidential race to his political opponent, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a scheme which involved plans to kill the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was stopped because it failed to get the backing of the armed forces officials. The current president was inaugurated without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, many his backers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the federal district, Brasília.

The police stepped in and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been incited by him whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the time, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also banned from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
