A bettor made nearly half a million dollars from wagers on the downfall of Venezuela's president just before it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of American actions.

Changing Odds in Wagers

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a blockchain-based service, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the end of January increased in the hours before Donald Trump declared on Saturday that Maduro had been apprehended.

A single trader, which registered on the site in December and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a initial bet of over $32,000.

The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Market Signals Before Public Statement

Market statistics shows that users put the odds of a political change at just under 7% in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.

Yet these probabilities had climbed to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and surged in the morning of Saturday, suggesting a sudden change in betting activity just before the social media post was made.

"This specific wager has all the characteristics of a bet based on non-public details," stated an industry expert.

A handful of other platform users also profited large payouts from bets on the same outcome.

Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges

Politicians are beginning to pay attention.

A bill put forward on the start of the week aims to prohibit federal workers from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in the United States, with participants able to bet on everything from elections to politics.

This sector were examined under the previous administration. However it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market arena.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids trading on insider information of any form."
